Why FREE BOOKS are beneficial to both Reader and Author

Many readers like free books because they like to read, and free is good. Some readers find free books are not as good, so they prefer to pay. Some readers like to get the first book of a series free, and then don’t mind paying, and if this is you, please click the promo image below.

Free books help the authors get feedback and is also free advertising for their book.

Advance Release/Review Copies (ARC’s)

If you don’t mind writing a review, ARC’s might be your thing. These books may be the final version of the book, just waiting for the release date, or sometimes they are the versions just before final formatting, so they look a bit messy, but the story is still good. I have one such book here, ironically, the paperback (PDF) edition is formatted, but the eBook is not.

If you get an ARC, you are expected to publish your review as soon as the book is published. You are expected to be honest, but some people don’t like to write a bad review and therefore don’t publish it. If this is the case, you should let the author know. I know it’s hard, but when you asked for the copy, you made an agreement to give your opinion.

Beta Copies

Beta readers get to read works in progress, and send their feedback to the authors. Some beta readers are paid, others are unpaid. Unfortunately, many are scammers who claim to be free, run your story through a spell checker, then say that they can give you more feedback if you pay them. Then they run it through an AI.

Needless to say, I’ve seen all this before. If you are an author looking for a beta reader you will find several groups on Facebook where the beta readers will do it for free, but much more scammers. So, what can you do?

First, anytime you post an ad (whether it is for beta reading, or a job posting) you should always put something in to see if the person read the ad or not. In the old newspaper days, people would just look in the help wanted and dial the number in the ad, hoping for a job. Today, bots might answer your post, and claim to be a beta reader, so ask them to put a random word in their reply, and if they don’t put that word in their reply, don’t reply to them.

Second, only send them part of the story, like the first two chapters. If they send you good feedback, then you can send them more.

I have two beta editions available, one is my novel where the story is in chronological order. The other is a omnibus edition, where the stories are grouped by main character. So, my test is asking which edition they want. If they don’t say, then I won’t reply.

My Beta

I’m looking for Beta readers for my novel and omnibus (book set) editions of a cross-genre, relaxing/cozy read, multi-POV, with diverse characters.

The novel is 118K words and is in chronological order, or at least that’s the main thing I want you to check. The story has been through several revisions, and I need a few people to make sure I haven’t repeated information too much, or put the cart before the horse anywhere. 😉

The omnibus edition is the same story with 133k words and is written as 6 different novellas, each with its own main character. You can read the same scene in up to 3 different POV. I mainly want to know if repetitive info is okay, and if this is a viable product.

I have 5 or 6 individual parts that have been through many beta readers, so I don’t expect any other major problems. If you are interested, I’ll send you Part 1, and IF I like your feedback, I’ll send you part 2, etc. I need all your feedback in 3 weeks (July 26 weekend).
