Valentine’s Day, the Hero of Your Story, and Learning to Be on Your Own Side

Valentine’s Day usually focuses on romantic love—and that can be beautiful. But it can also feel complicated, lonely, or heavy if your life doesn’t match the commercials.

So this year, I want to offer a different perspective.

You’ve probably heard the phrase:

“You can’t love someone else until you first love yourself.”

That line gets repeated so often it can feel hollow—or even frustrating. But at its core, it’s not about perfection or confidence or having everything figured out.

It’s about how you talk to yourself.

The person you spend the most time with in your entire life is… you.
The voice that narrates your failures, your hopes, your doubts, and your small wins — that voice matters.

Which brings me to something new I’m starting.

Over the next while, I’ll be sharing daily thoughts built around a simple idea:

Picture yourself as the hero in your own story.

Every good story has:

setbacks
awkward moments
difficult supporting characters
scenes that feel pointless at the times

But none of those things mean the hero has failed.
They mean the story is still unfolding.

Heroes don’t win because they’re flawless.
They win because they keep going — sometimes quietly, sometimes imperfectly, often without applause.

So today, on Valentine’s Day, here’s the reminder I hope you carry with you:

Be on your own side.
Speak to yourself the way you would to someone you love.
And remember — even when nothing dramatic is happening, you’re still in the middle of your story.
