The Good, The Bad, and The Undecided Discussion Questions

These discussion questions accompany The Good, The Bad, and The Undecided, one of six interconnected novellas in Earth’s Secret Alliance. They are intended for classrooms, homeschool groups, libraries, book clubs, and individual readers.

Themes: Blackmail, power, small compromises, conscience, and forgiveness.

Most questions do not have a single correct answer. Use them to compare perspectives, support interpretations with evidence, and discuss the characters’ choices. These questions may be refined as the Study Edition develops.

Discussion Questions

  1. Newman gives in to a blackmailer one small step at a time. At what point could he have stopped it? Why is the first compromise the most dangerous?
  2. Newman becomes a better leader after admitting he has failed. Why can admitting weakness make someone stronger?
  3. Several characters must decide whether to obey orders or follow their conscience. When is disobedience justified?
  4. Charlie observes that Newman learned "what evil looked like. Not monsters or aliens, but ordinary people who chose power over principles." Do you agree that ordinary choices, not monsters, are where evil usually lives?
  5. Can someone be forgiven while still being held responsible for what they did?
  6. Newman says Jones’s belief in him makes him want to become better. Is that a form of love?
